What is the 1980s Tokyo look?

Two looks in one decade. The bubble one is neon, lacquer, chrome, branded electronics and city pop. The other is the black shock: Kawakubo and Yamamoto in Paris in 1981, oversized, asymmetrical, distressed and almost entirely black. They do not mix.

Japanese popular music that emerged in the late seventies and peaked in the eighties, built on polished studio production and strong western influence, about the life and aspirations of an urban middle class with money. It is the soundtrack of the bright half of this page.

Why is so much of it black?

Because of 1981. Kawakubo and Yamamoto showed in Paris in clothes that were dark, unfinished and cut away from the body, and the press called it the black shock. That is the moment the association was made.

What are the materials?

For the bright half, lacquer, chrome, smoked glass and brushed aluminium, with the light coming from signage rather than lamps. For the dark half, wool and heavy cotton, and anything that drapes rather than fits.

What is the one object to start with?

A brushed aluminium object that was engineered rather than styled. It is the whole decade in one hand.

How the look works

There are two Tokyos in this decade and they point in opposite directions. One is the bubble: Sony, Casio, Suntory, neon, and city pop, a music that emerged in the late seventies and peaked in the eighties, made with polished studio production and a strong western influence, about an urban middle class with money and an outward look.

The other arrived in Paris in 1981, when Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto showed clothes that were black, oversized, asymmetrical, distressed and unfinished. Critics who had come for glamour called it the black shock. That collection is the reason a Japanese wardrobe still reads as black four decades later.

Both are correct and mixing them badly is the failure mode. The bubble half is bright, branded, lacquered and optimistic, lit from signage rather than from lamps: lacquer, chrome, smoked glass, brushed aluminium. The other half is monastic, dark, and cut to obscure the body rather than flatter it. Pick a side and the room resolves itself.

The one thing the two halves share is finish. Whichever Tokyo is being bought, the object should be made properly. This was a decade with a great deal of money in it and it shows in the tolerances.

What is the 1980s Tokyo look?: Two looks in one decade. The bubble one is neon, lacquer, chrome, branded electronics and city pop. The other is the black shock: Kawakubo and Yamamoto in Paris in 1981, oversized, asymmetrical, distressed and almost entirely black. They do not mix.
What is city pop?: Japanese popular music that emerged in the late seventies and peaked in the eighties, built on polished studio production and strong western influence, about the life and aspirations of an urban middle class with money. It is the soundtrack of the bright half of this page.
Why is so much of it black?: Because of 1981. Kawakubo and Yamamoto showed in Paris in clothes that were dark, unfinished and cut away from the body, and the press called it the black shock. That is the moment the association was made.
What are the materials?: For the bright half, lacquer, chrome, smoked glass and brushed aluminium, with the light coming from signage rather than lamps. For the dark half, wool and heavy cotton, and anything that drapes rather than fits.
What is the one object to start with?: A brushed aluminium object that was engineered rather than styled. It is the whole decade in one hand.
