Haute couture has a founder and he was English. Charles Frederick Worth opened in Paris in 1858, supplied Empress Eugenie and was appointed court designer, and he was the first to put the designer's name above the client's. The House of Worth ran for a hundred years across three generations. Everything on this page descends from that shop.
The silhouette of 1900 is a corset and almost nothing else. The S bend pushed the chest forward and the hips back into a pouter pigeon line, and it held until about 1908. That matters here because it makes this the one world on the site that cannot really be worn: there is no modern wardrobe that produces the shape.
What survives is the surface. Silver, crystal, iridescent glass, lace, gilt, and gaslight giving way to early electric. This is a world to furnish rather than to dress in, which is why nearly everything here belongs on a table, a mantel or a wall.
The failure mode is the costume shop. Ostrich feathers and a corset over a modern body reads as a theme night in a single object. Christofle on a table, Baccarat in a hand and one Mucha on a wall does not.
