How the look works

Kathleen Detoro dressed the pilot and the four seasons after it, and she built Walt out of colour rather than out of garments. He starts in the lightest khakis and oatmeals, which is a man who has been beaten down. Green arrives as he does. Black is not available to him until he is Heisenberg. The wardrobe states the plot in tones, usually before the dialogue gets to it.

So the way in is to pick a point on that line rather than to buy the whole show. Early Walt is tan, oatmeal and a windbreaker: genuinely unremarkable clothing worn by a man nobody looks at twice. Late Walt is black and nothing else. The series never mixes the two, and neither should anybody copying it.

The pork pie hat exists because Bryan Cranston wanted something to keep the sun off his head on location and Gilligan liked one he saw. It became the most recognisable object in the show by accident. Worth knowing before buying one: it is not a symbol, it is a hat that worked.
