What is the difference between the Stranger Things look and generic eighties?

Ordinariness. The production team buys real furniture at suburban estate sales and avoids period stereotypes deliberately, so the room is wood, brown, orange and warm lamplight rather than neon and chrome. Nothing in Hawkins looks designed.

What do the kids actually wear?

Ringer tees, tube socks, corduroy, denim, a windbreaker. Cheap, plain, and fitting slightly wrong, because a parent bought it in a small town. The costume designer says fit and make are where the story is, which is why a well tailored modern version reads as costume.

How do you do the room?

One warm lamp instead of a ceiling light, wood tones, a corded phone, a real board game, and restraint with the string lights. Buy secondhand where you can. This is the one world where the original object is often cheaper than a reproduction.

Only the mall. Starcourt is where the show puts its eighties excess, and it is deliberately the artificial part of Hawkins. Everything else is brown.

What is the one object to start with?

A ringer tee. It is the cheapest thing on the page and it dates a photograph instantly.

How the look works

Chris Trujillo's team spends months buying at estate sales in ordinary suburbs, sourcing real furniture, real decor and real props, and avoiding eighties stereotypes on purpose. That is the whole method. Hawkins reads as a period because it is furnished with things people actually owned, not with things that signal a decade.

Which gives the rule: buy the ordinary object, not the retro one. Wood panelling, brown and orange, a corded phone, a lamp that is too warm and not bright enough, a board game with a worn box. Anything designed in this century to look like the eighties will announce itself immediately.

Amy Parris, who dressed the last three seasons, says the story is told through fabric type, through how well a garment fits and through how well it was made. The children of Hawkins are dressed in cheap clothes bought by parents, so the fit is slightly off and the make is poor. A well cut modern reproduction of a ringer tee fails at exactly the point the show is making.

The failure mode is Miami. Neon, pastel, chrome and grids belong to a different eighties and a different climate. Hawkins is brown, and the only place the show allows excess is the mall, which is the fake part of the town by design.

What is the difference between the Stranger Things look and generic eighties?: Ordinariness. The production team buys real furniture at suburban estate sales and avoids period stereotypes deliberately, so the room is wood, brown, orange and warm lamplight rather than neon and chrome.
