How the look works

Adam Arkapaw wrote a manifesto in pre production about the ideology behind the images, much of it about what was actually unique about Louisiana to somebody from outside it. That is why the season reads as a place rather than as a genre. The dread is in the humidity and the light, not in the props.

Most of these sets are lit by their own lamps. Arkapaw used practicals wherever he could and hid LED strips under ledges and behind furniture when a room needed definition. It is the most directly copyable thing on this page: no ceiling light, lamps inside the frame, and something concealed under a shelf doing the rest.

The palette follows from the lighting. Sulfur, sepia, tobacco, and green gone brown, because everything is lit warm and nothing is lit brightly. There is no cool white anywhere in the season.

The clothes are fieldwork clothes from 1995 and nothing more. Flannel, chambray, a belt, boots that have been wet. Nothing in the wardrobe is a costume, which is why this look survives daylight and why it collapses under a ceiling light.
